A natural volcanic peak and turquoise lagoon rising within one of Malaysia’s most pristine marine sanctuaries, off the coast of Semporna in Sabah. Bohey Dulang is the jagged, jungle-clad rim of an ancient volcanic crater, its collapsed caldera enclosing a luminous, sheltered lagoon prized for generations as a pearl cultivation ground and still nicknamed Pearl Island. A steep, root-tangled trail climbs through dense rainforest to a summit viewpoint where the reward is one of Southeast Asia’s most arresting panoramas: a ring of emerald peaks cradling a bay of impossible blues, framed by neighboring islands scattered across the Celebes Sea.

Part of the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, an eight-island protected reserve of coral gardens, seagrass meadows and traditional Bajau Laut sea-nomad settlements, the site pairs physical challenge with cultural depth. The hike is short but demanding, rewarding early risers with cooler air and clearer light. Below, the lagoon’s still waters and fringing reefs offer a quieter counterpoint to the climb, completing a rare encounter with untouched island wilderness.
