|Lençóis Maranhenses National Park — Lagoa Azul and the Turquoise Lagoon Dunes Barreirinhas, Brazil ⚲
A vast natural park of rippling white sand dunes cradling brilliant turquoise and sapphire freshwater lagoons, Lençóis Maranhenses is one of the planet’s most surreal landscapes. Spanning over 155,000 hectares along the Atlantic coast of Maranhão, this UNESCO World Heritage site defies expectation: an arid-looking desert that, after seasonal rains between June and September, fills with hundreds of crystalline pools trapped between towering dune crests. Lagoa Azul, the most celebrated of these mirrors, glows an impossible cobalt blue against bleached sand, while Lagoa Bonita offers sweeping panoramic views from its ridge at golden hour.
Reaching the lagoons requires a 4×4 journey and a local guide through shifting terrain from the gateway town of Barreirinhas or the bohemian fishing village of Atins. The atmosphere is one of profound stillness and scale — wind-sculpted dunes stretching to the horizon, punctuated by pockets of impossibly clear water. It is a landscape shaped entirely by wind, rain, and time, offering travelers a rare, meditative encounter with raw natural wonder.
