|Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay Krabi, Thailand ⚲
A natural turquoise lagoon and crescent beach carved into the limestone cliffs of Ko Phi Phi Leh, Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay form one of the most photographed marine landscapes in Southeast Asia. Sheer karst walls rise vertically from jade-green water so clear that sunlight refracts in shifting bands of emerald and sapphire, while the neighboring bay opens onto powder-white sand framed by dense tropical jungle.
Part of Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, this protected enclave gained global fame as the filming location for The Beach, drawing travelers seeking the same cinematic stillness. Longtail boats and speedboats glide through a narrow rock passage into Pileh’s near-perfect natural swimming pool, where snorkelers drift above coral gardens and reef fish. Strict visitor quotas and timed access, introduced after ecological recovery efforts, now preserve the fragile reef system and pristine shoreline. Best experienced at sunrise or late afternoon when day-trip crowds thin, the site remains an essential, awe-inducing encounter with Thailand’s Andaman Sea at its most dramatic and unspoiled.
