A natural island sanctuary of towering ochre dunes and shifting turquoise tidal channels, Bazaruto Island is the crown jewel of the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, off the coast of Vilankulo in Inhambane Province, Mozambique.

Sculpted by wind over millennia, its dune fields rise dramatically above freshwater lakes and pristine white beaches, framing a coastline where the Indian Ocean shifts through impossible gradients of aquamarine and jade. Beneath the surface, coral gardens and seagrass meadows shelter one of the last viable populations of dugong on the East African coast, alongside manta rays, whale sharks and five species of nesting turtles.

The island carries deep cultural resonance for local fishing communities, whose dhows still trace the same channels navigated for generations, lending an unhurried, timeless rhythm to daily life. Protected since 1971 and now managed with African Parks, Bazaruto remains one of the continent’s most important marine and terrestrial sanctuaries — a place where raw geological drama meets rare ecological fragility, largely untouched by mass tourism.
