A natural turquoise lagoon carved into the limestone heart of Miniloc Island, Big Lagoon is one of El Nido’s most celebrated marine sanctuaries. Encircled by sheer karst cliffs draped in tropical vegetation, its waters shift through impossible shades of jade and sapphire depending on the light and tide. Access is part of the theatre itself: boats moor at the mouth of a narrow channel, where visitors transfer to small kayaks or bangka to glide beneath overhanging rock into the hidden basin beyond.

The lagoon’s sheltered, current-fed waters stay calm and swimmable, ideal for a slow paddle past schools of fish and the occasional monitor lizard sunning on the rocks. Framed by the Bacuit Archipelago’s dramatic geology, the setting feels primordial, almost cinematic, and is rightly considered a highlight of any El Nido island-hopping itinerary. Best visited early or late in the day, when the crowds thin and the light turns the cliffs gold.
