A pristine coral atoll of exceptional natural beauty, Saint Joseph Atoll forms part of the remote Alphonse Group in the Seychelles’ Outer Islands, some 400 kilometres southwest of Mahé. Encircling a vast turquoise lagoon roughly 3.5 kilometres long, the atoll is fringed by a necklace of small, palm-fringed islets and shallow reef flats teeming with marine life.

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, this UNESCO-recognised sanctuary shelters nesting seabirds, hawksbill and green turtles, and dense populations of reef sharks and bonefish that patrol its crystalline shallows. The lagoon’s mirror-still waters, framed by sun-bleached sandbanks, shift colour with the tide, from pale jade to deep sapphire.

Under the stewardship of conservation researchers and eco-tourism operators, Saint Joseph Atoll remains largely untouched by development, offering a rare glimpse of the Indian Ocean’s outer islands as they existed before mass tourism. Its isolation and ecological richness make it one of the last great wildernesses of the western Indian Ocean, a place where silence, tide and horizon define the experience.
