A monumental natural viewpoint within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Horseshoe Bend looks down on the Colorado River as it carves a 270-degree curve through the sandstone, roughly 1,000 feet below the rim.

The approach is modest. A short, sandy walk from the trailhead off US Highway 89 climbs a low rise, and then the earth simply ends. Below, emerald water arcs around a towering amphitheater of Navajo sandstone, its walls banded in rust, ochre and violet. The scale resists the camera. The silence, broken only by wind and the occasional raven, does not.

Light shapes the experience. Late afternoon sets the cliffs aglow and deepens the river’s green, while early mornings bring cooler air and thinner crowds. The rim is unfenced in places, so step with care and keep a respectful distance from the edge.

The overlook sits on ancestral Navajo and Southern Paiute homelands near the town of Page and is open year-round. Entry is free, though the City of Page charges a parking fee at the trailhead lot. Bring water, sun protection and unhurried time.
