A natural island paradise of shifting sand dunes and luminous turquoise channels, Bazaruto Island is the largest landmass within the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, a protected marine sanctuary off the coast of southern Mozambique. Known locally as Ilha do Bazaruto, or the Island of the Mist, it rises from the Indian Ocean roughly 15 kilometers from the mainland town of Vilankulo.

Vast dune fields, some towering over 100 meters, cascade toward freshwater lakes and mangrove-fringed lagoons, while offshore coral reefs shelter dugongs, sea turtles, dolphins and a dazzling array of tropical fish. The island’s interior blends barefoot luxury lodges with traditional fishing hamlets, where dhows still glide across the channels much as they have for centuries.

Days here unfold around dune-surfing, dhow safaris, snorkeling and horizon-wide sunsets over water that shifts from pale aquamarine to deep sapphire. It is a place shaped by tide and wind, offering an unhurried, elemental encounter with one of the Indian Ocean’s most pristine coastal wildernesses.
