A spectacular natural wonder rising in the high Andes, Vinicunca — known as Rainbow Mountain — reveals striated bands of ochre, lavender, turquoise and gold across its slopes, the result of mineral deposits exposed over millennia. Perched at over 5,000 meters above sea level in the Cordillera Vilcanota, this once-obscure peak near the Quechua village of Pitumarca has become one of Peru’s most photographed landscapes.

Just beyond the main viewpoint lies the Red Valley, a quieter counterpart where deep crimson earth meets glacial peaks and grazing alpacas, offering a starkly different palette and far fewer crowds. Together, the two sites form a dramatic high-altitude circuit steeped in Andean cosmology, where local communities still regard the surrounding mountains as sacred apus.
