A natural marine sinkhole of extraordinary scale, the Great Blue Hole plunges into the heart of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, roughly 70 kilometers off the coast of mainland Belize. Formed as a limestone cave system during the last Ice Age before rising sea levels flooded its collapsed ceiling, this near-perfect circle stretches 318 meters across and drops 124 meters into a hypnotic gradient of turquoise, cobalt, and midnight blue.

Protected as part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and designated the Blue Hole Natural Monument, the site reveals cathedral-like limestone stalactites within its submerged caverns, along with resident reef sharks and vibrant coral walls encircling its rim. Its silhouette, famously charted by Jacques Cousteau, remains one of the most recognizable natural formations visible from above.

Reachable only by boat or seaplane, the Great Blue Hole rewards divers and snorkelers with a rare descent into geological history, while its surrounding waters offer some of the clearest visibility in the Caribbean.
