A natural turquoise lake cradled within a glacially carved amphitheater, Moraine Lake is one of the most photographed landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. Its otherworldly blue-green hue, produced by light refracting off suspended rock flour, shifts with the angle of the sun against a jagged wall of ten sawtooth summits known as the Valley of the Ten Peaks.

Set within Banff National Park at an elevation of nearly 1,900 metres, the lake is reachable only by shuttle, rewarding early risers with a hush broken only by wind moving through subalpine larch and spruce. The Rockpile Trail, a short scramble above the shoreline, delivers the iconic panorama once featured on Canadian currency.

Beyond its visual drama, the site carries deep ecological and cultural weight — a glacial relic shaped over millennia, sacred to Indigenous peoples long before mountaineers named its peaks. Paddling a canoe across its still waters at dawn remains one of the most transcendent experiences the Rockies offer.
