A natural forest sanctuary, the Dragon’s Blood Forest of the Diksam Plateau crowns the limestone highlands of central Socotra Island, where surreal groves of Dracaena cinnabari spread their umbrella-shaped canopies against a backdrop of eroded karst and deep canyons. Endemic to this remote Yemeni archipelago and found nowhere else on Earth, these ancient trees seep a crimson resin once prized by traders as dragon’s blood, used in dyes, incense, and traditional medicine since antiquity.

Perched roughly 700 to 1,000 meters above the Arabian Sea, the plateau offers sweeping views over the Dirhur Canyon and the Firmihin forest, the largest and densest stand of these otherworldly trees. Bedouin herders still graze goats among the gnarled trunks, maintaining a centuries-old rhythm of life largely untouched by modern development. At dusk, the horizon ignites in ochre and rose, silhouetting the trees like sculptures from another epoch.

Often dubbed the Galápagos of the Indian Ocean, Socotra’s isolation has produced one of the planet’s most extraordinary concentrations of endemic flora, and this forest remains its most iconic emblem.
