|Preikestolen Pulpit Rock and Lysefjord Jørpeland, Norway ⚲
A dramatic natural landmark, Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) is a sheer granite plateau that thrusts 604 metres above the glacial waters of Lysefjord in Rogaland, western Norway. Formed some 10,000 years ago when the last Ice Age carved this fjord landscape, the flat-topped cliff measures roughly 25 by 25 metres and offers an almost vertiginous vantage point over one of Norway’s most celebrated fjords.
The ascent is a rewarding 8-kilometre round trip through rugged birch forest, exposed rock, and glacially polished terrain, climbing steadily to reveal ever-widening views of steel-blue water framed by towering cliffs. Reaching the summit rewards hikers with a rare, humbling silence broken only by wind and the distant hum of the fjord below.
Steeped in Norse mythology and shaped by centuries of local fishing and farming life along the fjord’s edges, Preikestolen has become a modern pilgrimage for nature lovers, photographers, and adventurers from across the globe. Best visited in the long light of the Norwegian summer, it remains one of Scandinavia’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders.
