A natural viewpoint on the granite summit of Mount Amos, this lookout in Freycinet National Park gives the most commanding view of Wineglass Bay, one of Tasmania’s most photographed coastlines. The bay’s white crescent of sand and clear water curves between the pink-hued peaks of the Hazards and the Freycinet Peninsula.

The approach is a steep, exposed scramble of about 454 metres. It crosses sloping granite slabs and takes most walkers two to three hours return. The work is rewarded at the top, where the whole bay lies below you with open sea beyond. Early morning light turns the rock rose-gold and the water milky turquoise.

The peninsula lies on the traditional country of the palawa people, and it was shaped over millennia by sea, wind and lichen-stained stone. The mood here is quiet and elemental, with wind, gulls and wallabies in the scrub, and the roar of surf comes up faintly from far below.

Wear proper footwear and carry water. Avoid the granite when it is wet or windy. A Tasmania Parks pass is required for entry to the national park.
