A chain of glacial turquoise lakes crowned by a legendary summit viewpoint, Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri lie deep within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nepal’s Khumbu region. Sitting at roughly 4,700 to 5,000 metres, the lakes spread along the edge of the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal. Their colour shifts from jade to deep sapphire as the light moves across the moraine.

Above the village of Gokyo, a steady pre-dawn climb leads to the 5,357-metre summit of Gokyo Ri. From the top, the Himalayan chain unfolds in a full circle. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu stand above the glacier, and the first sunlight turns their ridgelines gold. Many trekkers prefer this view to the one from Everest Base Camp, because the trails are quieter and the vantage point is higher.

The setting is also cultural. Sherpa communities regard these waters as sacred, and prayer flags and stone cairns mark the paths. Simple teahouses offer warmth, dal bhat and a quiet place to rest. The approach rewards patience and slow acclimatisation. October-November and April-May are the most reliable seasons.
