A natural marine sanctuary, the Marieta Islands rise like sculpted basalt sentinels from the Bay of Banderas, their seabird-dense cliffs sheltering one of the planet’s most extraordinary geological secrets: Playa del Amor, the Hidden Beach. Formed within the open dome of a collapsed volcanic crater, this sunlit crescent of pale sand is reachable only by swimming or kayaking through a narrow rock tunnel carved by decades of military bombing practice long before the islands became a protected national park.

Above, the crater walls frame a perfect oval of sky; below, the water shifts through impossible gradients of turquoise and sapphire as it threads into the hidden cove. The surrounding islets, uninhabited and fiercely protected, host blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and nesting colonies found nowhere else on the Mexican Pacific coast.
