|Cala Mariolu Baunei, Italy ⚲
A pristine natural beach hidden within the Gulf of Orosei, Cala Mariolu is one of Sardinia’s most celebrated coastal jewels, reachable only by boat or a demanding cliffside trail. Its shore is composed of smooth white and pink-hued pebbles, worn round by centuries of Tyrrhenian surf, framing water that shifts in extraordinary gradients from pale turquoise to deep sapphire as the seabed drops away.
Towering limestone cliffs rise sheer behind the cove, their pale rock catching the Mediterranean light and casting the bay in constantly changing tones throughout the day. Wild juniper and Mediterranean scrub cling to the crevices above, while the isolation of the setting, accessible only via the sea or the rugged Selvaggio Blu trekking route, preserves an untouched, almost primordial atmosphere.
Part of the Baunei coastline within the Gennargentu and Gulf of Orosei National Park, Cala Mariolu embodies the wild, dramatic beauty that has made this stretch of eastern Sardinia legendary among sailors, hikers and lovers of unspoiled nature alike.
