This spectacular natural cove is one of the most photographed shorelines in the Mediterranean, a hidden pocket of white sand accessible only by sea or via a dramatic clifftop viewpoint. Towering sheer limestone walls plunge into an impossibly turquoise bay on the northwest coast of Zakynthos, sheltering the rusted hull of the MV Panagiotis, a vessel long rumored to have run aground while smuggling contraband cigarettes and spirits before authorities closed in during a 1980 storm.

The wreck, half-buried in sand for over four decades, has become an emblem of Ionian mythology, its weathered steel a stark contrast against the pale cliffs and glowing water below. Boats glide in from Porto Vromi and Agios Nikolaos, cutting engines to drift silently past the shipwreck’s silhouette, while above, visitors lean over the famous overlook for the view that launched a thousand postcards. Wild, remote and untouched by development, Navagio remains one of Greece’s most arresting natural theatres.
