|Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Bedugul, Bali, Indonesia ⚲
This sacred Balinese water temple rises serenely from the misty shores of Lake Bratan, its tiered meru towers appearing to float upon the still, mirror-like waters beneath the volcanic highlands of Bedugul. Built in 1633 by the King of Mengwi, the temple honors Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes, and rivers, whose blessing sustains the intricate irrigation systems that nourish Bali’s rice terraces below.
At dawn, when the highland air is cool and cloaked in fog, the eleven-roofed pelinggih meru dedicated to Shiva and Parvati seems suspended between earth and sky, a vision of spiritual equilibrium mirrored in the lake’s glassy surface. Surrounded by manicured gardens and framed by distant volcanic peaks, the site remains an active place of Hindu Balinese worship, alive with offerings, incense, and quiet ceremony. Beyond its beauty, Ulun Danu Bratan embodies Bali’s profound cultural reverence for water as the source of agricultural abundance and spiritual harmony.
