Amanjiwo Resort, Magelang (Indonesia)
Discover website ↗This extraordinary clifftop resort crowns a natural amphitheatre in the cultural heartland of Central Java, gazing directly over the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Borobudur — the largest Buddhist sanctuary on earth. Named « Peaceful Soul » in Sanskrit, Amanjiwo was conceived by architect Ed Tuttle as a living homage to the 9th-century temple it overlooks: its grand rotunda, stone-clad suites, and terraced gardens echo the mandala geometry and volcanic-rock palette of Borobudur itself. Thirty-six freestanding suites and private pool villas dissolve into the surrounding rice paddies and jungle, framed by the distant silhouettes of five volcanoes. Guests are invited into the rhythms of Javanese culture through private dawn access to Borobudur, batik workshops, gamelan performances, and nightly scholarly lectures on the temple’s cosmological significance. The resort’s open-air restaurant serves refined Indonesian cuisine alongside panoramic views of the monument at dusk — a tableau that renders the boundary between architecture and sacred landscape almost imperceptible.
